Open Books is a nonprofit organization based in Chicago, Illinois. Through their Book Grants, they provide readers of all ages with engaging, appropriate, and high-quality books. Each week, they deliver thousands of books to schools and nonprofits across Chicagoland.

Funding for their work comes in large part from generous donors, the sale of donated books at their award-winning Pilsen and West Loop stores, as well as online.

Each year, generous readers donate hundreds of thousands of books to support literacy. They sell those books in their stores and online to help fund the programs and use and give them away in their literacy and book grant programs. The Open Books, book department produces zero waste, and give away 2.5 books for every 3 they sell.

They welcome any sellable book in good condition. This includes fiction, nonfiction, craft books, cookbooks, children’s books, and more! They also accept LPs, CDs, and DVDs in good playable condition. Since they give away so many children’s books, they are always in need of more high-quality titles.

Founded by Stacy Ratner in 2006, Open Books has since started several literacy programs.

One of the programs with our community partners in Chicago, and with Imagination Library, we’re sending that magic directly into the homes of the kids who need it most.

They intend to change that. Open Books’ Imagination Library program will provide every child in Chicago with access to free, age-appropriate books delivered directly to their homes. The books arrive by mail – often the first mail a child receives – every month from birth until the child turns 5. Each one is brand new and carefully selected by a panel of experts on childhood literacy and early education.

Tax Deductible: We are a 501(c)3 nonprofit, so all donations are fully tax deductible. Looking for a receipt for your donation, click here.
